GE110 -- Lab 2

Fall 2003

Overview

In this lab you will compete with other teams in a "tractor pull" contest.

Prelaboratory Activity

Design and build a tractor that can pull as much as possible.

Contest Rules
  • Teams are limited to the parts in their kit and six 1.5 volt AA batteries.
  • The instructor will provide a trailer consisting of the base of the Zoobot with the motors disconnected (see p 17 of the LEGO booklet) and the payload.
  • Each tractor will be attached to the trailer using a wire lead.
  • The tractor must pull a given load at least one foot in order for it to count as a valid pull.
  • Each pull will last no more than 30 seconds.
  • Teams will be allowed three pulls each and may select their own payload for each pull.
  • Each team is responsible for programming their tractor. This will be considered when evaluating design and creativity points.
  • The tractor with the largest payload on a valid pull will be declared the winner.
  • Your grade will be based on performance, design, and creativity.
  • Your instructor, at his/her sole discretion, may modify any of these rules or make up new ones. Your instructor's decisions are final.
Report (one report per team)

Prepare a short (less than one page) memo containing the following:

  • Describe how you did in the competition.
  • Describe the key features that made your tractor a success or failure.
  • Describe your program and the reasoning behind it.
  • Suggest ways that your design could be improved.
  • Document the time you spent on this lab assignment.
  • Any suggestions you have for how the lab could be improved.

As with any report you submit, correct spelling and grammar are required. Be sure to keep copies of all your files in case something gets lost.
